Countries that accept the EHIC

You can use the EHIC in Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus (the Greek part), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Great Britain, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. The EHIC can also be used in: Azores, Canary Islands, Ceuta, French Guiana, Gibraltar, Guadeloupe, Madeira, Martinique, Mayotte, Melilla, Réunion, Saint-Barthélemy and St. Martin.

No need to pay on the spot with your EHIC

When you present your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), healthcare providers in other countries know that the invoice will be paid by CZ. It is sent directly to us, meaning that, in most cases, you do not have to pay the invoice up front and claim the costs back later. The front of the card is identical to a regular CZ healthcare card, but the back is blue, making it easy to identify.

Equal treatment for foreigners

Treatment is provided on the same basis as it would be to a resident of that country. Imagine, for example, that you suddenly need treatment in France; the costs of this treatment will not be set off against any outstanding deductible you have in the Netherlands. If a personal contribution applies, you will need to pay this yourself. You can submit a claim to us for these costs, as they may be covered under an additional insurance package or your travel insurance.

Validity of the EHIC

The European Health Insurance Card is valid for up to five years, and you may use it for as long as you are insured with us. If you are no longer insured with us and you use the EHIC anyway, you will be required to repay us for the costs incurred. The EHIC is strictly personal, meaning you cannot lend the card to someone else.

Request your new EHIC

Have you lost your EHIC? Or have your personal details on your card changed? Then you can ask for a new pass. You will receive the pass by post within 5 working days.

Cases in which the EHIC is not valid

The EHIC does not cover medical costs if you:

  • travel abroad for the purpose of obtaining medical care;
  • are treated by a private healthcare provider or at a private clinic;
  • are living abroad permanently.
